Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes

Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira and more, compared by scenery, days and success rate.

Once you have decided to climb, choosing between the Kilimanjaro routes is the next big step. Seven main trails lead to the summit, each with its own scenery, difficulty and success rate. The right one depends on your experience, your budget and how many days you can spend acclimatising. Here is how they compare.

Kilimanjaro routes compared

Every trail reaches Uhuru Peak. What differs is the scenery, the sleeping arrangements and, above all, how much time your body gets to acclimatise.

Machame route

Nicknamed the Whiskey route, Machame is the most popular trail for good reason: stunning, varied scenery and a strong success rate thanks to its natural climb-high, sleep-low profile. We recommend the 7-day Machame climb for the best acclimatisation.

Lemosho route

Remote and beautiful, the Lemosho route offers the best acclimatisation profile and one of the highest summit-success rates, ideal if you want the strongest possible chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.

Marangu route

The only route with hut accommodation, Marangu suits climbers who prefer a bed to a tent and a more budget-friendly climb.

Shira route

The Shira route begins at high altitude by vehicle and is wonderfully scenic, though its early elevation makes acclimatisation on the first day important to manage.

Rongai route

Rongai is the only trail approaching from the drier northern side. It is quieter than the southern routes and a strong choice in the rainy shoulder months.

Umbwe and the Northern Circuit

Short, steep and direct, Umbwe is the most demanding trail and is best left to fit, experienced trekkers who acclimatise well. The Northern Circuit, by contrast, is the longest route on the mountain, typically nine days, looping the quiet northern slopes for outstanding acclimatisation and the highest success rates of all.

How many days should you allow?

Days on the mountain matter more than which trail you pick.

If your schedule and budget allow, add a day, as it is the single best investment you can make in reaching Uhuru Peak.

Which route has the best success rate?

The short answer

Summit success is driven less by the trail itself and more by how many days you take. Longer itineraries on Lemosho and the 7-day Machame consistently record the highest success rates.

Rushed five-day climbs are the hardest to complete. Our advice: give yourself as many days as you can. You can see how the park manages the trails via TANAPA, and browse every option on our Kilimanjaro trekking page.
