Kilimanjaro Packing List
Smart layering and gear for five climate zones and a freezing summit night.
Read guideA well-planned safari packing list can make or break your trip. With varied weather, dusty game drives and strict luggage limits on light aircraft, packing smart matters. Use the checklist below to arrive ready for anything the bush throws at you, and pack light: a soft duffel of around 15 kg is the norm for internal flights.
Before the detail, here are the items almost every traveller needs: neutral-coloured layers, a warm fleece, a light rain jacket, comfortable closed shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, a good camera and any personal medication. Everything below expands on these.
Stick to neutral tones such as khaki, beige, olive and brown, and dress in layers, because mornings and evenings are cool while midday is warm.
Avoid bright colours, and skip camouflage patterns altogether — camouflage clothing is discouraged in Tanzania.
Tanzania’s climate shapes what you pack. In the cooler dry months of June to October, mornings and evenings can be genuinely cold, so add an extra warm layer. During the green season of April, May and November, a waterproof jacket and quick-drying clothes earn their place. If you are moving between altitudes, combining a game drive with the Ngorongoro highlands or a Kilimanjaro climb, plan for a wide temperature range. Our guides to the best time to visit Tanzania and Kilimanjaro weather help you pack for the exact season you are travelling in.
Leave the bulky hard suitcase, single-use plastic and drone behind, and skip camouflage clothing. Keep valuables to a minimum. If you are combining your safari with the beach, add a swimsuit and reef-safe sunscreen for Zanzibar. For vaccination requirements, check the official WHO travel advice before you fly.
